Thirteen years ago, local surfer Robin Martin's son was killed in a tragic skateboarding accident. To honor the life of the 15-year-old, the Matt Martin Surf Contest was formed. All proceeds go to the Matt Martin Memorial Fund and are distributed to other surfers with medical needs.
The money raised benefits two local surfers and their families. One beneficiary was a beloved, longtime Pensacola surfer, Ted Cobia, whose son Cody has a rare type of Muscular Dystrophy. The second recipient was the courageous Tom Davis, who 4 1/2 years ago was in a surfing accident that rendered him a paralyzed quadriplegic.

"I hear a beautiful sound in my favorite place. . . I hear the roar of the barrel as I race the lip. . . I hear people talking as I pull out. . . I hear boasting among fellow surfers. . . But most of all, I hear my Dad cheering me on. These things I hear in my favorite place. The Wave." - Matt Martin |
