Michael Taylor Mahood had a passion for surfing that began when he was just five years old. Whether it was a boogie board, skimboard, skateboard, or surfboard—if it had a board, Mike was on it. But surfing was always his greatest love. He continued to ride the waves until the age of 45, finding pure joy in the ocean.

As an adult, Mike loved visiting Innerlight's Surf Camp to watch young surfers learn the sport he cherished so deeply. He traveled to surf in California and Costa Rica, where he experienced big waves and unforgettable adventures—but his heart always belonged to Pensacola Beach. It was there he found a true community among local surfers and friends.

Beyond his life in the water, Mike proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, he worked at Naval Air Station Pensacola’s Welcome Station, providing visitor screening and clearance. One of his most cherished roles was working with the Blue Angels, assisting their families and friends during visits. True to his nature, Mike quickly built lasting friendships with the Blue Angels team and staff—just as he did with everyone he met.

On April 17, 2024, Mike’s vibrant life was cut far too short. He will always be remembered for his kind heart, warm spirit, and infectious sense of humor.

To honor Mike’s memory and his love for surfing, his mother Sandi Huster has established a scholarship fund to help kids learn to surf on the beach he loved so much.  Two recipients have already been awarded scholarships for surf camp this year.  However we are looking to bless more families.
