Meet Shawn Martin
We are honored to share that proceeds from this year’s Yancy Spencer III Memorial Surf Contest are being donated to support Shawn Martin, a dear friend and longtime Pensacola local, as he courageously battles a rare and life-altering kidney disease.
At 45 years old, Shawn has spent the past 25 years calling Pensacola home. Since 2001, he’s been a familiar, friendly face at Apple Market—always kind, always steady. But in August of 2023, everything changed. The day he received his diagnosis marked the beginning of a difficult and uncertain journey.
Over the past year, Shawn has faced unimaginable challenges—undergoing 15 surgeries while struggling with the everyday things we so often take for granted. His health has forced him to step back from work and put on hold the things he loves most, like surfing and skating—passions that have long been a part of who he is.
Despite these setbacks, there is hope. Shawn has recently made it onto the kidney donor list—a process that has been both physically exhausting and financially overwhelming. We stand with him as he continues to fight, and we believe in the strength and goodness of the community around him.
